The Journey of our bed delivery

The Journey of our bed delivery

SSHCO launched a bed campaign from December 2019 to February 2020,  to provide additional beds for our clinic ward in Maar, South Sudan. With the generosity of our community of donors we were able to fund the need and purchase new bed for our clinic in Maar!

We have faced several challenges over the last couple of years due to the lack of beds. Patients were forced to share a bed with up to three people, which could  put our patients at high risk for cross contamination and infection. On the other hand, we also faced privacy concerns between patients. In America, this would be very culturally uncomfortable; however, in Maar, this is culturally unthinkable.

In February, with the incredible support of our donors, we were able to make this dream a reality. The money we raised over the course of two months was put toward the purchase of 10 new hospital beds. . In March, SSHCO’s Country Director, Peter, prepared for the bed delivery from Juba to Maar, via ground transport. However, we encountered some obstacles along the way. After breaking down 60km outside of Juba, Atem was forced to turn back for repairs. Although this put us behind schedule, the next day, he drove from the crack of dawn until dusk over crevassed and dangerous roads to ensure the delivery of the beds. We couldn’t have done it without him!

Peter’s resourcefulness and Atem’s long hours at the wheel and dedication are just a few of the examples as to why SSHCO’s mission stands strong.

While this was taking place, our CEO, COO and volunteer, Dr. Linda Morgan, conducted a complete Site Survey of the clinic and the surrounding areas, spent time with the children and families and provided the entire village with a sense of hope.

Without the dedicated efforts and bravery of people like them, and without the love and support of people like you, nothing would be possible.
